Look at the role of the teacher in the early portions of the book. he is the one who marches the boys down to the recruitment station the day of their graduation. As a teacher he is the voice of authority in sending the students into the battlefields. For students, concentrate on the fat kid who joins only because he will be compl,etely ostracized if he doesn't. Naturally, he will be the first of the group to die. Good luck.
On the contrary, I believe the teacher is the voice of death, and the fat kid is just some fat kid.
