Why do you think Keller is trying to mitigate Steve’s action ?

Keller knows Steven took the fall for him. While Steve rots in jail, Keller stays a prosperous man. If Keller can mitigate Steve's actions, in his own head, Keller doesn't have to feel as bad for what he did to Steve. Does that make sense to you?
