When mother refers to the fallen apple tree. She mentions that there will be “ more light with that thing gone “. On one level this statement can be taken literally . how else could this comment be interpreted ?

I think mother is finally trying to accept that her son Larry is not coming home. The tree represented her futile and delusional hope that Larry was coming home. With the tree gone and her acceptance that Larry is gone, there would be more light in her life.
