What does Chris mean by "We're at a railroad station waiting for a train that never comes in"?

Larry Keller is the son that never came home from the war. Mother is delusional thinking he will come back and the rest of the family hide their pain by tacitly supporting her. It is like they are waiting for Larry (train) to come back but never will.
