Success for Chris means a happy family at all costs. He is ready to leave the success of running the family business behind in order to marry the girl he loves. At the end of Act 1, Chris does a turn around and sounds convincingly like his father. When Ann accepts his proposal his similarity to his father appears when he says "he'll make her a fortune." What he claimed was most important became overshadowed by material things.
