Mother- She says that it is funny that Larry's tree blew down in his birthday month, and this shows that he is coming back. Uncomfortable, Chris tries to change the subject and talk about how good Annie looks. Mother says that she loves Annie because she did not run off with another man as soon as her beau was declared missing. Mother has a headache, perhaps from a bad dream in which she saw Larry reaching to her from the cockpit of his plane. She sees this as more evidence that they had been hasty in putting a memorial tree up for him.

Chris is astonished by his mother's feelings. She tells him that they should never have planted the tree, while Chris says, "maybe we ought to put our minds to forgetting him."

Mother believes that Larry is still alive. She thinks that the fact that this month is his birhday, the fact that his tree has blown down and the fact that his fiance came back, all at the same time are signs to his return.

Chris thinks that it's time to forget about Larry. Larry have been missing for three years and his fiance has just came back. Chris believes that Larry is died and he wants to ask Annie (Larry's fiance) to marry him.

Keller thinks about his mother. He asked:"What's mother going to say?"

Meaning he care about his mother who still believes that Larry is still alive.
