Joe's role-playing game with Bert involves pretending that the Keller home is a jail. The game itself illustrates that Joe sees his home as a sort of jail. He cannot be free because inside he knows what he has done, even if he's unwilling to admit it. This foreshadows the eventual enlightenment, which will in fact set him free.

The destruction of the memorial tree during the storm foreshadows the destruction of the family.
