This is a pretty big question. You should consider a general failure of husbands to provide the financial and emotional support expected by the wives and children. Really each couple is a microcosm of this failure from which you can trace this pattern. Consider Joe and Kate Keller. Joe's failure to do the right things throughout the play adds to the emotional pressure cooker the couple endures.
