The conversation between Ann and Chris is redundant at best. Their situation is difficult, and Ann makes it clear that she cannot stay in Chris' family home while the relationship between them remains a secret. She's uncomfortable, as is Chris; together they're a mess. Chris feels guilty about being a survivor, and Ann feels guilty about her father, her relationship with her fiance, and the expectations of Chris' parents.

Chris' end of the conversation has everything to do with guilt, doubts, and worry about his mother. Ann's end of the conversation is filled with the desire to bolster Chris' confidence in himself and pride in the things he's accomplished.
