Chris's feelings for Ann are meant to come across as extremely pure. He is an idealist (where his father is a pragmatist) and while Ann was Larry's fiancee, Chris believes he can provide her a life to make up for what she lost in Larry. He is very much in love, almost a puppy love, which makes the tragic end all the more heartbreaking, since they have to face the ugly truth.
