One example of the narrator's love/hate relationship with her mother can be found when she overhears a conversation in which her mother laments how she (the narrator) always runs off to avoid more work in the house. Her mother then goes on to say that she looks forward to the day when her daughter will be older and willing to help in the house. The narrator doesn't like this coversation and see her mother as the enemy...... someone who is plotting to curtail her freedoms.
