How does the town’s business/economy change, and how does this affect Edgar?

Business and economy completely collapsed, Edgar is unable to attain any financial reports, and as a reult, he closes the bank. People are trading what money they have for necessary supplies, and soon their money becomes worthless. It's all about needs, and you can't eat cash. Edgar, in despair, kills himself.
