preaching and women in Adam Bede

Does anyone know if it was typical for a woman like Dinah to be a preacher in 1799? At least in the Methodist tradition?

Yes, absolutely.  Women were very active in preaching in the Christian traditions, particularly before the mid-1800s.  After that, there was an overriding conservatism that forced most women out of preaching.

What caused the conservative shift against women preaching? It seems to coincide with the rise of slavery politics that brought about the Civil War. Is there any relationship between the two?
