Why would the children not be able to function on a two-dimensional planet?
The primary reason is because they cannot expand their lungs to be able to breathe. The dimension also has an effect on the minds of the children, but not much is given specifically as to cause, just remember that this is a flat dimension, so three dimensional beings do not belong there.
