what mistake did Charles make when he met the man with red eyes? what does this show about his character?

In chapter 7 the three of them go on campsites and they meet the man with red eyes who talks without opening his mouth. Charles made a mistake. What was it? I really need to know it for a classroom grade.

The man is displeased with Charles Wallace, but tells him that if he looks into his eyes, the man will show him what is behind them. Charles Wallace reluctantly agrees (that's his mistake). The color drains from Charles Wallace’s face and he begins to look different.
