how does The Man with Red Eyes control charles wallace's mind ?

They see this guy at the end of the platform. He kind of looks like Darth Vader without the creepy asthma breathing. It turns out this guy can speak directly into their brains. Charles Wallace claims that something is speaking through the Darth Vader-like guy and looks into his creepy red eyes. Charles's pupils dilate and he seems to fall under its control.
