The author wants the reader to envision and understand the masculine society, which dominated the 19th Century. His purpose was to define existing stereotypes; women as possessions, gender roles, inferiority, and to demonstrate their true place as equals. During the course of the novel we learn to see these women as intelligent, imaginative individuals.

The time this novel was written is a testament to the author, who looked beyond the beliefs and norms of the society he lived in and envisioned a society of equality without gender bias.
