Rasheed treats Laila solicitously and tries to impress her because he wants to marry her.

Laila is described to be a pretty girl, however Rasheed wants something that he couldn't get with Mariam; a child. Particularly a son. Laila does have a child but 1) Rasheed is not the father, and 2) it's a girl. This causes Rasheed to show oppression and dislike towards Laila because he did not get his way, therefore, a lifelong bond between Mariam and Laila is formed.
