Why does Mariam surrender to the Taliban?

Are there passages in the book that provide any insight into this decision

I don't have the book in front of me but I know that Mariam had no choice. The Taliban gave women zero rights. They had the right to get beaten like Mariam and Laila were by Rasheed. Even the judge says something like, “God has made us different, you women and us men. Our brains are different. You are not able to think like we can. Western doctors and their science have proven this.” Mariam has little choice.
