I think Mariam tires of being complacent at Rasheed's abusiveness. Mariam becomes a mother figure to Laila. She tries to protect Laila from Rasheed. In Chapter 45, Marium kills Rasheed. Killing Rasheed is a cathartic experience for her; it is a purging of so much abuse and misery.
