1. Mariam's relationship with her mother is strained. Nana lived as Jalil's housemaid until she became pregnant with Jalil's baby, Mariam. Jalil cast Nana out of his household and built her the shack in which she and Mariam live. Mother has lost all hope for a happy life and Mariam is a physical manifestation of her rebuke from Jalil. At the same time, Mariam is her only familial connection.
