Religion becomes a source of conflict in the novel. For instance, Rasheed does not adhere completely to his faith (Islam), but rather picks and chooses which laws to follow or not follow as he sees fit. An example of this would be Rasheed's refusal to fast on Ramadan, as opposed to his requirement that his wives follow restrictions in their clothing. Miriam directly points this out when he forbids her from going out without her burqa.
