I personally don't believe that Mariam should harbor guilt over her mother's suicide. Mariam's mother was certain that her daughter would become to attached to her father..... that he'd hurt Marian the same way he hurt her. She was afraid of being alone and terrified of abandonment.

"Everything I endured for you! How dare you! How dare you abandon me like this, you treacherous little harami!"

"I'll die if you go... I'll swallow my tongue and die. Don't leave me."

Unfortunately, Marian reacted like most any young girl would and didn't take her mother seriously. She was too wound up in her own affairs and felt her mother was just simply jealous..... worried about nothing. Miriam certainly misjudged her mother's true intent, but she was ultimately not responsible for her actions.
