A Thousand Splendid Suns

Figurative Language and Mood (24-26)

In the last three chapters of section 2 of “A Thousand Splendid Suns,” Khaled Hosseini dramatically changes the mood of the story. On the following page using approximately 3 paragraphs -- you are to analyze how and why this mood is created. In your first paragraph you should describe the mood that Hosseini creates for these chapters, how it is different from the mood of the story up to this point, and then explain why this mood is necessary and/or appropriate, considering what is currently happening in the story itself. The remaining space should be spent analyzing Hosseini’s use of figurative language. Locate at least 4-6 uses of figurative language within these chapters (each should be a different type). Provide quotes, and describe the mood that they create. Then draw the connection (i.e. HOW does this use of figurative language create the mood in question?). For example, if the mood of the last three paragraphs was gentle and loving [spoiler alert: it’s not... don’t use this example in your answer], you might show examples of figurative language, and explain how the examples draw attention to the small details of things that the characters do for each other to show affection.
