The title of the novel is taken from a line from a seventeenth-century poem called “Kabul.” It is written by the Persian poet Saib-e-Tabrizi. There is a lot of sun and moon imagery that represents the timeless nature of Afghanistan. I think the sun represents the strength of women like Laila and Mariam, who remain bright even when there is only darkness. Like Afghanistan their strength is hidden but remains timeless.
