Why do you think Wakil did not help Mariam and Laila escape?
If you view his character sympathetically, he may have turned the two women in for fear that he’d be punished for lying for them. He also had his wife and young child with him, and he may have worried that defending Laila and Mariam would mean endangering his family. It is also possible that Wakil thought like the Taliban, and suspected that Mariam and Laila were fleeing from their husband, and judged that to be wrong.
Why doesn’t Laila go through with the abortion? How would you have felt about her decision if she had gone through with it?
