Blanche's arrival immediately upsets the equilibrium of Stella and Stanley's way of life. Blanche feels that merely visiting her sister in the flats of New Orleans is beneath her social class. She feels she has been pulled “down off them columns and how (she) loved it”. Blanche’s "independent spirit" are at odds with Stanley's sense of masculine control. Blanche urges her sister to stand up to Stanley. Stanley feels insecure about his low status when Blanche is nostalgic about her privileged upbringing.Stanely feels the need to physically and emotionally conquer Blanche to validate his own identity.
