Why does Blanche hide her past?

Blanche is trying to pass as a beautiful, desirable, Southern Belle. She likes the attention she receives from her sister, and she is really looking for a husband to solve her problems. If people were to find out that she was a terminated teacher with a drinking problem, who's also been known to prey on young boys...... that illusion wouldn't last very long!
