Joffrey Baratheon

Joffrey is the King on the Iron Throne, Roberth Baratheon’s assumed son. He has blond hair just like his mother and also inherited her thirst for power. He is inexperienced and believes that just because he is the King he has the power to do whatever he wants. He loses his power when his grandfather comes to King’s Landing and his attitude is started to be controlled more. He is killed during his own wedding.

Brianne

Brienne Tarth, commonly called Brienne of Tarth, is the only living child and heir of Selwyn Tarth, Lord of Evenfall and head of House Tarth. She has an unfeminine appearance and is extremely skilled in battle. She is loyal but naive, idealizing how a knight should be. After he delivers Jamie to King’s Landing, she is sent by Jamie to go and find Catelyn’s daughters and take care of them.

Varys

He is a eunuch and a member of Joffrey’s Small Council, holding the position as master of whisperers. He remained loyal to house Targarean but agrees to help Tyrion escape from King’s Landing.

Donal Noye

Donal is a smith at Castle Black and one of the Brothers left behind. He trust Jon and he is the one who takes Jon to Maester Aemon to treat his wounds. He fights against the wildlings when they attack the Wall but is killed when he tries to protect the gate.

Balon Swann

Ser Balon is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard.

Samwell Tarly

Samwell Tarly is the eldest son of Lord Randyll Tarly and his wife Melessa Florent. He takes part in the great raging beyond the Wall and survives the battle of the Fist and the mutiny at Craster’s keep. He returns to the Wall with Gilly. On their way back, they are attacked by wights but Coldhands saves them. At the Wall, Sam wins the majority of votes for Jon as the next Lord Commander.

Osmund Kettleblack

Osmund is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard and he is described as being a lot more gentle than the others.

Merrett Frey

Merrett Frey is a member of Frey and a POV character in the epilogue of A Storm of Swords. Merrett is the ninth son of Lord Walder Frey and the fourth son born of Walder's marriage to Amarei Crakehall.

Tywin Lannister

Tywin is the Lord of Casterly Rock and Hand of the King. He is King Joffrey’s grandfather and Tyrion, Cersei and Jamie’s father. He is a stern man, with big ambitions for his children and with a thirst for power. Tywin complots with Roose Bolton and Walder Frey against Robb and he is partially responsible for the Red Wedding. He loves his children in his own way but can’t stand Tyrion because his wife died during his childbirth.

Cersei Lannister

Cersei is Tywin’s oldest child and Jamie’s twin. She is a cunning woman, driven by her desire to acquire as much power as possible but proves herself unfit to have it. She loves her children above everything but her education lead Joffrey to have a belief system that goes against what his grandfather wants. She slowly loses her political power once her father becomes Hand of the King and she is affected by this. After Joffrey is killed, she is eager to place the blame on someone and she thinks that Tyron and his wife, Sansa, are responsible for her son’s death.

Robb Stark

Robb is the King of the North and Catelyn and Eddard’ son. He is however inexperienced and starts taking rash decisions. After the battle of Blackwater, it seems that the Lannisters are the most likely to win the war and Robb is forced to retreat to Riverrun. Because of his marriage with Jeyne, Robb loses the support that House Frey offered him because they felt offended that Robb didn’t kept his promise to wed a girl from the Frey family. He also loses the Karstark forces after he sentences to death Lord Karstark because he killed two prisoners as a way to get revenge on Jamie Lannister who was let go by Catelyn. He manages to make peace with House Frey by convincing Edmure Tully to wed a Frey girl and Walder Frey accepts. That was however a lie and Robb together with the vast majority of his forces are killed during the Red Wedding.

Lady Catelyn

Lady Catelyn is King’s Robb mother, at Riverrun at the beginning of the book. She is a devoted mother who would do anything for her children, even release a traitor thinking that she will be able to get her daughter’s back. She is killed during the Red Wedding and her body is dumped in the Green Fork. Her body is retrieved three days after her death and she is resurrected by Lord Beric who gives his life for hers. After his death, Lady Catelyn becomes Lady Stoneheart and the leader of the brotherhood without banners.

Sansa Stark

Sansa Stark is a member of House Stark and Catelyn’s daughter. She remained in King’s Landing after her father’s execution and remained engaged to Joffrey until after the Battle of Blackwater. After the Tyrells come to King’s Landing, they express their intention to help her and Lady Olenna premises her that she will arrange for Sansa to be wed to Willas, the Tyrell heir. This doesn’t happen because Tywin finds about their plan and, not wanting to lose Sansa and possibly the North, marries her to his son, Tyrion. Tyrion refuses to consummate the marriage unless Sansa wants to which only enrages Tywin more. During Joffrey’s wedding, Sansa escaped with Dantos and Petyr’s help. They go to Eyrie where Petyr weeds Sansa’s aunt. Lysa tries to kill Sansa after she sees Petyr kissing her but is saved by Petyr who throws Lysa through the Moon Door. Sansa continues to remain in Eyrie, taking the name Alayne Stone.

Stannis Baratheon

Stannis is late King Robert’s older brother who also declared himself King after his brother’s death. Stannis attempted t attack King’s Landing but his forces where crushed and he had to return to Dragonstone. He is described as being a stern man, who never smiles and with an impressive stature. He tries to get support from the North and thus takes his forces to the Wall where he fights against Mance’s army. He offers to legitimize Jon if he agrees to support him but his offer falls through when Jon is named commander of the Night’s Watch.

Arya Stark

Arya is Catelyn’s youngest daughter, on her way to Riverrun with Gendry and Hot Pie. They are captured by the Brave Companions and Arya is recognized as Eddard’ daughter. She attempts to flee and is caught be Sandor Clegane who plans to take Arya to her mother and win a place in Robb’s service. They reach the Twins during the Red Wedding and thus they are forced to run. Sandor is badly wounded during a fight and so Arya finds herself alone again. Arya changed from the way she was in the last book and rediscovered her identity. She continues to be driven by her desire to avenge her family and because of this reason, she heads towards Bravos.

Bran Stark

Bran is the second son of Lord Eddard and Lady Catelyn, a crippled boy traveling beyond the Wall. He has the gift of having prophetic dreams and they reason why they travel towards North is to meet the three- eyed crow who supposedly will be able to teach Bran more about his gifts. Bran also has the power to enter his wolf’s body. They manage to get passage beyond the Wall with Samwell’s aid and then the meet Coldhands who joins Bran’s group.

Oberyn Martell

He is a member of House Martell and the Princes’ brother. He is a very promiscuous character, known for being bisexual and for his adventurous life. He comes to King’s Landing to claim a seat in the Small Council on his brother’s behalf and also because he wants to seek justice for her sister’s death, killed during Robert’s Rebellion by Gregor Clegane. He fights against Gregor as Tyrion’s hero during his trial and manages to wound Gregor before is killed.

Gendry

He is one of Arya’s companions who knows about her true identity. He is a skilled smith taken by Yoren as a recruit for the Night’s Watch. Gendry is ignorant about his real parentage and doesn’t know that he is one of Robert’s bastards. Because of this, Cersei searches for him and plans to have him killed. After they are captured by the brotherhood without banners, Gendry decides to stay with them.

Loras Tyrell

Loras is a member of House Tyrell and Mace Tyrell’s son. He is made a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard after the battle of Balckwater. He is a charming men and a skilled knight but extremely arrogant. He continues to mourn Renly and it is suggested that Loras may be homosexual. He blames Sansa for Joffrey’s death, considering that she wanted to get revenge on his sister.

Robert Arryn

Robert is Lady Lysa’s son, a week sickly boy at Eyrie. After his mother’s wedding, he becomes attached to Sansa who became his surrogate mother. Because of his health, Petyr believes that Robert will eventually die.

Daenerys

Daenerys is a member of House Targaryen, the last from her family. She is the self-declared Queen of the Iron Throne. She manages to gather a big army in a short span of time and also liberates Meereen and Yunkai, cities known for practicing slavery. Daenerys is described as being beautiful, with blond hair and violet eyes. Despite being young, she proves that she is a born leader, caring for her people and thinking about how she can better their lives.

Janos Slynt

Janos is the former commander of the Kingsguard, sent to the Wall by Tyrion Lannister. After Jeor Mormont dies, Janos puts his name forth as a candidate for the position of Lord Commander. He also imprisons Jon saying that he is a traitor and later sends him to kill Mance, hoping that he will die in the process. Janos is not named Commander due to Samwell’s efforts of convincing Pyke and Mallister to support Jon.

Edmure Tully

Ser Edmure is Hoster Tully’s son and Catelyn’s brother and the one who succeeds his father. He agrees to marry one of Walder Frey’s daughters after Robb broke his promise to take as wife one of Walder’s daughters. He is not killed during the Red Wedding but remains a prisoner.

Melisandre

Melisandre is a priestess of R'hllor and a shadowbinder in the service of Stannis Bartheon. She insists that Edric Storm must be killed as a sacrifice but Stannis refuses to do so. She has great power over Stannis and his wife and influences their decisions.

Brynden Tully

Also known as the Blacfish, he is Hoster Tully’s younger brother and a knight from house Tully. He is a skilled fighter and is named Warden of the Southern Marches. He remains in Riverrun during Edmure’s wedding.

Jeor Mormont

Also known as the Old Bear, he is the Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch. He is the leader of the great raging beyond the Wall during which they are attacked by wights. He is killed during the mutiny at Craster’s Keep.

Jon Snow

Jon is lord Eddard’s bastard who became a brother of the Night’s Watch. Jon briefly joins the wildlings but he is sent to scout the Wall, manages to escape them and join his brothers again. He helps by protecting the Wall but is imprisoned briefly because of his apparent betrayal. Jon is named Lord Commander and thus takes the Night’s Watch while also being legitimized as the next heir to the North by Robb.

Dontos Hollard

Dantos is a foul at King’s Landing who swore to protect Sansa. Together with Petyr, they manage to smuggle Sansa out of King’s Landing. Dantos is killed by Petyr who believes that Dantos will eventually end up revealing what happened.

Margaery Tyrell

Margaery Tyrell is the only daughter of Lord Mace Tyrell and his wife, Lady Alerie Hightower. She is intelligent and cunning like her grandmother but knows how to make herself lovable. She befriends Sansa quickly and she finds about Joffrey’s true personality from her. She marries Joffrey but he is killed during their weeding, presumably by Lady Olenna.

Jorah Mormont

Jorah is an exiled knight, loyal to Daenerys. He reveals that he loves Daenerys in a romantic way and starting from that point on, Daenerys makes sure to always be with someone else when Jorah is with her. Jorah is forced to admit that he acted as a spy for the Iron Thrown but doesn’t think he has done anything wrong which determines Daenerys to exile him.

Lady Olenna

Lady Olenna is Mance Tyrell’s mother who came to King’s Landing for her granddaughter’s wedding. She is a very cunning woman, intelligent and very different from her son. It is suggested that Lady Olenna was the one who planed Joffrey’s assassination and that Margaery was aware of her plan.

Petyr Baelish

Petyr is a member of Joffrey’s small council, sent to marry Lysa Tully. He is the one who takes Sansa with him and gives her a new identity to protect her. When Lysa tries to kill Sansa, Petyr comes to her aid and throws Lysa through the Moon Door, saying that the only women he loved was Sansa’s mother, Catelyn.

Jamie Lannister

Jamie is Tywin’s son and the commander of Joffrey’s Kingsguard. He loses his hand on his way to King’s Landing from Riverrun and he also changes his perception regarding his promises. Because of this, he gives Oathkeeper to Brianne and makes her promise him to find Sansa and Arya for him. He is the only one who thinks that Tyrion is not responsible for Joffrey’s death so he lets Tyrion out before he is executed.

Shae

She is a prostitute brought by Tyrion to King’s Landing. At first, Tyrion is madly in love with her but then gradually their relationship starts to falls apart. She ends up betraying Tyrion and testifying against him during his trial. Angered, when Tyrion is released by Jamie, he goes looking for her and finds her in his father’s bed and kills her. She is described as being a pretty girl of eighteen, with dark eyes and hair.

Tyrion Lannister

Tyrion is a member of House Lannister, Lord Tywin’s third child. Because he is a dwarf, his father and sister dislike him and Tyrion suspects that his sister brobed a member from the Kingsguard to kill him during the Battle of Blackwater. After Lord Tywin returned to King’s Landing, Tyrion is cast aside from his position as Hand of the King and is named instead Master of coin. He receives little recognition for what he has done for King’s Landing and is forced to marry Sansa at his father’s command but he goes against his wishes to consummate the marriage. After Joffrey is killed, Tyrion is accused of being the one who murdered him and imprisoned. Before he is killed, Jamie and Varys help him escape and Tyrin kills his father and Shae whom he finds in the same bed. Despite being cast aside by his family, Tyrion manages to survive through his wits and intelligence.

Meryn Trant

Meryn is a member of Joffrey’s Kingsguard, known for his cruel nature. After Jamie returns to King’s Landing, he criticizes Meryn because of his willingness to beat Sansa.

Bronn

He is a selsword who was loyal to Tyrion but then agrees to not help Tyrion during his trial and marry into a wealthy house.

Harwin

He was a member of Lord Eddard’s household before he was killed and then became a member of the Brotherhood without Banners. He is the one who recognizes Arya and plans to take her to Riverrun to ransom her.

Beric Dondarrion

Also known as the Lightning Lord, he is the leader of the Brotherhood without Banners. He is too a follower of the Lord of Light and it is suggested that he was killed numerous times and then resurrected by Thoros. He plans to ransom Arya to her family but is unable to do so after Arya runs away.

Thoros of Myr

He is a red priest of R’hllor from the Free City who joined the Brotherhood without Banners. He resurrects Beric after his fight with Gregor Clegane and it seems that he has many more powers. He is known for fighting in battles with swords on fire.

Jeyne Westerling

Jeyne is the girl Robb married during the War between the five kings. She is a girl coming from a small House, House Westerling. She is beautiful, with brown eyes and chestnut hair and is shy. She is not killed during the Red Wedding and remains at Riverrun after she is pardoned by the Iron Throne.

Mance Rayder

Also known as the King Beyond the Wall, Mance is a former Sworn Brother who deserted the Night’s Watch. In the book, it is revealed that he wants to go beyond the Wall with the wildlings not because he hates the Night’s Watch, but because the Others and the wights started attacking the free folk. His attack against the Wall fails when Stannis’ forces come to the Brothers’ aid.

Selyse

She is King Stannis’s wife.

Walder Frey

Walder Frey is Lord of the Crossing and the head of a numerous family. He was originally one of Robb’s bannermen but after Robb marred Roslin, Walder’s heir withdrew the House’s support. In orer to make amends, it is decided that Edumure Tully will marry a girl from the Frey family. However, enraged by Robb’s actions, Lord Walder Frey complots with Roose Bolton and Tywin Lannister and kills Robb, his wife, Catelyn and the vast majority of Robb’s bannermen and army during what became to be known as the Red Wedding.

Gilly

She is one of Craster’s wife- daughter, pregnant with Craster’s child. When the Sworn Brothers return from Fist of the First Men, Gilly gives birth to a son. Craster dies before he could sacrifice his son and Gilly is taken to the Wall. There, she serves as a wet nurse to Mance’s son.

Meera Reed

She is Lord Howland Reed's daughter and oldest child and Jojen’s older sister. She is a skilled fighter and during their journey North they group relies on her to catch their food. She is slim and has a cheerful attitude that often contrasts with her brother’s.

Jojen Reed

Jojen is a member of house Reed, Lord Howland Reed's only son. He has the greensight and acts as a teacher to Bran who also awoken his powers. He is a very mature boy, always serious, and he advices Bran to go North, realizing that he has nothing to teach him anymore. He has an older sister, Meera, who accompanies them North.

Ser Gregor Clegane

Commonly referred to as the Mountain, Ser Gregor is one of Tywin’s men, commanding his own forces and doing whatever is told to. He retakes Harenhall for Tywin and kills everyone inside with the exception of the cook how opened the gates and he is the one who cuts Vargo’s feet and arms off. When Oberyn arrives in King’s Landing, he asks that justice to be done for his sister killed by Gregor and Tywin arranges that Gregor remains far away from King’s Landing while Oberyn is there. This changes when Cersei chooses him as her champion during Tyrion’s trial and he returns. He fights with Oberyn and is heavily wounded and poisoned by him after he admitted to raping and murdering Elia and her children. Tywin demands that he is to be kept alive with the intention of killing him later as a gesture of good will towards the Martell house. His fate remains uncertain.

Vargo Hoat

Also referred to as the Goat, he is the commander of the Brave Companions. Originally, Vargo and his men were loyal to Tywin but after he left Harenhall, they went over to Bolton’s side in exchange for Harenhall. He is the one who captures Brianne and Jamie and intends to kill Jamie so he could marry a noble girl. His plans are ruined when Bolton sends Jamie to King’s Landing after Clegane takes Harenhall, he cuts Vargo’ hands and feet off.

Arstan

Arastan is Strong Belwas squire, old wise men who knows more than a mere squire should. Because of this, Jorah doesn’t trust him and even tells Daenerys that she shouldn’t trust him. Despite being old, Arastan is a skilled fighter and protects Daenerys on numerous occasions. Jorah recognizes him as Barristan, a former member of Robert’s Kingsguard and Targaryen’s Kingsguard whom he betrayd. He begs for forgiveness and Daenerys forgives him and makes him one of her advisors.

Strong Belwas

He is one of the men who accompany Daenerys on her journey and was sent by Illyrio to protect her. He is a former slave who used to be a fighter in the fighting pits. He kills the hero from Meereen and is part of the group who entered Yunkai through the sewers. He becomes loyal to Daenerys and becomes a member of her guard, accompanying her when she goes to buy the Unsullied.

Lysa Arryn

Lysa Arryn is Catelyn’s sister and the wife of the deceased Robert Arryn. She has a young frail boy, Robert Arryn, raised in Eyrie. She marries Peryr after he receives lands and a title from Tywin Lannister and reveals that she was the one who killed her husband because Petyr asked her. A jealous woman, she almost kills Sansa after she sees her and Petyr kissing. She dies after Petyr pushes her through the Moon Door.

Roose Bolton

Roose Bolton was originally loyal to house Stark and aided them in their battle against the Lannisters. Roose Bolton choses however to side with the Lannisters in the end, receiving for his service the title of Warden of the North, a royal decree of legitimization for his bastard son and Arya Stark that was to be weed with his son. Roose Bolton is the one who organized the Red Wedding and the one who killed Robb Stark in the end.

Alester Florent

Alester is Queen Selyse’s uncle, made Hand of the King. While Stannis isolates himself, Ser Alester decided in the King’s place.

Ilyn Payne

Ser Ilyn is the King’s Justice, loyal to King Joffrey. He is present at the King’s wedding.

Maester Pycelle

Pycelle is one of the members in Joffrey’s small council, a frail man who was thrown into prison after Tyrion became Hand of the King. After the position is taken by Tywin Lannister, Pycelle regains his seat in the council, but it becomes clear that he is weakened after his stay in the Black Cells.

Mace Tyrell

Mace is the head of house Tyrell, named master of ships after the Battle of Blackwater. He is considered by his own mother as being a big oaf and he is compared to a puff fish.

Ellaria Sand

Ellaria is Oberyn’s paramour with whom Oberyn has four daughters who are known as The Sand Snakes. Ellaria is Harmen Uller’s bastard daughter and she is known for her promiscuous behavior and exotic beauty. Ellaria accompanies Oberyn to King’s Landing and witnesses his violent death.

Craster

Craster is a wildling, a friend of the Night’s Watch. He is killed by Dirk following the Battle of the Fist of the First Men, when Craster allowed the Brothers from the Night’s Watch to remain at his keep.

Dyah

She is one of Craster’s wife and daughter.

Pylos

He is the healer at Dragonstone.

Devan Seaworth

Devan is one of Davos’s surviving sons, a squire to King Stannis.

Khorane Sathmantes

He is the captain of the galley Shayala’s Dance. He is the one who finds Davos and takes him to Dragonstone.

Salladhor Saan

Saan is a pirate in the service of Stannis Baratheon. Saan is Davos’s close friend and he advices him to give up on his plans to kill Melisandre.

Ferny

She is one of Crasrer’s wives who approached Sam and asked him to take Gilly away.

Tansy

She is the owner of the brothel in Stoney Sept.

Wallace Massey

He is Ser Denys Mallister’s steward and squire.

Bowen Marsh

Bowen Marsh was named castellan at Castle Black when the Lord Commander left. After Mormont dies, Bowen Marsh is named for a little while Lord Commander.

Butterbumps

A fool and jester from Highgarden who comes to King’s Landing when Margaery comes to marry Joffrey.

Harmen Uller

He is one of Oberyn’s companions to King’s Landing.

Ser Ryon Allyrion

Ser Ryon is one of the noblemen who accompany Oberyn to King’s Landing for Joffrey’s wedding.

Jalabhar Xho

En exiled prince from the Summer Isles, staying in the Red Keep.

Tanda Stokeworth

Lady Tanda is the head of house Stokeworth, mother to two daughters. Lady Tanda intends on marrying one of her daughters to Tyrion Lannister but is unsuccessful.

Maester Frenken

Lady Tanda’s healer and counselor.

Lord Gyles Rosby

He is one of Joffrey;s retainers, an old man, head of house Rosby. He is one of the guests at Joffrey’s wedding.

Morros Slynt

He is a squire in King’s Landing who testifies against Tyrion Lannister.

Jothos Slynt

He is Lord Janos Slynt’s second son who also testifies against Tyrion Lannister.

Boros Blount

Ser Boros was a former member of King Robert’s Kingsguard, removed by Queen Cersei because of his cowardice. After Tywin is named Hand of the King, he makes Boros a member of the Kingsguard again.

Philip Foote

He is a Ser that was made Lord of the Marches after the battle of Blackwater. He testifies against Tyrion Lannister during his trial.

Ser Tallad

A promising knight with whom Tyrion wants to marry Shae.

Lollys

Lollys is Lady Tanda’s youngest daughter, a girl of thirty- four, still unmarried. She remained pregnant after she was raped by an angry mob. Her mother plans to marry her to Tyrion but she ends up marrying Bronn.

Mors Manwoody

He is Lord Dagos’s son who accompanies Oberyn to King’s Land.

Dickon Manwoody

Dickon Manwoody is the son of the Lord of Kingsgrave who goes with Oberyn to King’s Landing.

Myles Manwoody

Ser Myles Manwoody is a knight of House Manwoody who accompanies Oberyn to King’s Landing. Axell Florent

Axell Florent

He is castellan of Dragonstone and the queen’s uncle. He is the one who takes Davos into custody when he arrives at Dragonstone.

Edric Storm

Edric is a boy of twelve, one of Robert’s bastard sons. He is taken to Dragonstone and his blood is used in a ritual performed by Melisandre. Because Davos is afraid that Melisandre may want to kill Edric, he arranges the boy to be sent away with a guard from Dragonstone.

Patchface

A fool at Dragonstone.

Davos Seaworth

He is the only surviving son Davos has left. He is the King’s squire.

Andrew Estermont

Ser Andrew is Ser Lomas’ son, loyal to King Stannis. He leaves Dragonstone with Edric Storm to protect him from Melisandre.

Osney Kettleblack

He is Ser Osfryd Kettleblack’ younger brother also knighted after the Battle of Blackwater. He is one of Cersei’s Sworn Swords.

Tommen Baratheon

Tommen is King Robert’s youngest son, sent away before the battle of Blackwater.

Shireen Baratheon

Shireen is Stannis’ daughter, a girl of twelve. Many think that Shireen will be eventually married to Tommen as a way to make peace between the two houses.

Ser Alyn Estremont

A member of house Estermont sworn to Joffrey Baratheon.

Podrick Payne

Podrick is a distant relative to Ilyn Payne and also Tyrion’s squire.

Ser Kevan Lannister

Ser Kevan is Joffrey’s uncle, named in the small council as master of laws after the Battle of Blackwater.

Ermesande Hayford

Ermesande is Tyrek Lannister’s infant wife, the last in her line.

Edric Storm

Edric os Robert’s only acknowledged bastard and he was taken by his uncle, Stannis Baratheon. He was eventually smuggled out of Dragonstone because Davos feared that Melisandre planned to have the boy killed as a sacrifice.

Moon Boy

He is a fool and jester in King’s Landing. Moon Boy performs at Joffrey’s wedding.

Lothor Brune

Lothor is a free rider in King’s Landing, loyal to Petyr Baelish.

Mathis Rowan

He is Lord of Goldengrove and a lord loyal to King Joffrey. He is one of the guests at Joffrey’s wedding.

Paxter Redwyne

He is lord of the Arbor and a member of Joffrey’s Small Council.

Hobber Redwyne
