why is the tree described as as awesome as an "artillery piece"?

The tree is a simulated adolescent battleground. The motif of war is intertwined with everything about the tree. The tree is forbidden, daring, courageous....The tree thus becomes, a "Huge lone spike dominating the riverbank, forbidding as an artillery piece."
