Finny was excellent at sports. Athletics is one of the things that defined Finny to Gene. Gene was lacking in the athletics department and part of Finny's beauty, at least to Gene, was his sports. When Finny quit, it was as if the beauty of Funny was disappearing, Gene, in part, blames himself.
