A Separate Peace

why does gene putting on finnys clothes comfort him?

When Gene puts on Finny's clothes, he sees himself as Finny "to the life" and this comforts him. Why is this so?

Gene feels a tremendous amount of guilt and wearing Finny's clothes is comforting. Wearing Finny's clothing allows Gene to feel closer to him (he hasn't seen him yet).

When Gene put Finny's clothes on it allowed him to feel a sense of confidence which he showed the readers (us) he was lacking this aspect in his life. He had always felt a little jealous of Finny for being so confident which we as readers heard when Gene told us about the color pink and some how it was okay for Finny to wear it because he simply didnt care what others thought. Gene just needs a sense of security and Finny gives him that.
