A Separate Peace

Why does Gene lie about living by the rules?

Between chapters 5-8 in the book A Separate Peace, Gene brings up living by the rules... How does he lie among those statements he brings up? I didn't catch them all.

He says that he must be tired from the train ride . The two boys part as friends and gene promises not to live by the rule. This shows that genes ability to live by conformity.
