Why does Gene hit Cliff Quakenbush?

Quackenbush aggravates Gene as to why he has taken the job as assistant senior crew manager.He goes on to belittle Gene saying he can't row.Quackenbush hints that only disabled students take that position. This really touches a nerve with Gene (i.e. Finny's injury) so he hits Quackenbush.
