Who helps Brinker grow the most from being conservative to rebellious?

On my opinion, Gene's character would have influenced Brinker's growth. Brinker's rebelliousness is clearly related to competition and jealousy.... the desire to be powerful. Over time, Brinker's competitivenss turns to aggression.
