What kind of piture of american soiety does knowles develop in his portrait of the U.S. in the early days of WWII? How might his writing of the book in the 1950s affect his description of the 1940s?

I feel that he tries to portray society as one of being scared but yet ready to defend their country. They were very young and naive boys who were not sure exactly what was going on.
