Of all the boys, Finny has the least to feel about the war. He cannot go; he is crippled, so he has nothing to prove or worry about. However, he ultimately has to face the fact that the war is real. Even as he is organizing a winter carnival, the war continues and Leper's desertion intervenes in the fun. Finny has monopolized Gene's time, yet Gene may soon have to leave for the war as well.
