The important thing to note about Leper's house is that it becomes his refuge when he is losing his mind. His decision to desert the army is not easily understood by the boys in his class; his near insanity - a dark vision of how war can affect one's mind - is set against the beautiful, calm Vermont environment makes his decision to desert even more questionable.
