In Leper’s home, Gene listens to his stories about the indoctrination of war into these boys. Gene becomes upset, not for just Leper but for his own illusions about life. Leper goes from a gentle nature loving person to an anxiety ridden mess. Gene realizes that, despite Finny's assertion that they could stave off adulthood, the perversion of adulthood is inevitable.
