How does gene function as a literary vampire in A Separate Peace?

The only thing I can see is that he lives off the life of Finny. He metaphorically and literally takes Finny's strength away. Gene seems to live off both Finny's accomplishments and his setbacks. Gene drains Finny's identity from him.
