Finny has repressed the truth about Gene's role in the accident. Brinker's mock trial finally dredges up Finny's repressed emotions. Distraught over the realization that Gene caused the accident that crippled him, Finny tumbles down the marble stairs at the front of the First Academy Building. Gene now sees how emotionally and physically fragile that Finny is. Gene must also face the awful truth of that day when his friend fell out of the tree.
