A Separate Peace

Gene and Finny have missed dinner, which is a punishable offense at Devon School. Why is punishment particularly lax during the summer session of 1942 ?

Finny is a charismatic boy who really charms the teachers that summer. It is also a time of war (WW2) and the boys remind the teachers of a peaceful, more innocent time.
