Finny apologizes to Gene for having had doubts about him. Of what might these "doubts" be an indication?

Finny might have doubted the subtext of their obsession with each other. This might have been sexual and fraternal. The basis for his obsession is up for speculation but Finny's doubts about the relationship surrounded his core obsessions with Gene.
