A Separate Peace

Chapter 13 4. Near the end of the last chapter, Gene reports that he was " ready for the war" and that he "fell into step" as well as his nature would allow. Why did he never "develope an intense level of hatred for the enemy" during World War II?

Last question. Thank yall so much.

Gene says, "I never killed anybody and I never developed an intense level of hatred for the enemy. Because my war ended before I ever put on a uniform; I was on active duty all my time at school; I killed my enemy there."
