At the end of the chapter, Gene runs off and leaves Leper babbling alone in the field. Why is Gene upset?

Leper accuses Gene of causing Finny to fall out of the tree, and reveals that he left the service because he was about to be discharged for mental health reasons. Gene finds both these comments disturbing for different reasons so he runs away.
