What details does Author use to show the ways in which war is changing the atmosphere at Devon?

The war brings a sense of urgency and tension to Devon. The boys have patriotic ideas of joining the war effort. They dig snow away from train tracks as part of their duty to the war effort. School seems secondary to the war that is going on.
