Finny developed a stance towards the war that protected him from feeling excluded from the war effort.  He says that the war isn't really happening -- it is just a trick thought up by fat old men.  This stance of disbelief is like the games Finny made up on the school grounds.  He uses his imagination to express his own freedom.  His real point of view about the war is more complicated than simply denying it, though.  In the end, Finny makes a confession to Gene about his real feelings about the war.
