Fly-fishing is the one redeeming feature that Paul had in his father's eyes. Fly-fishing was God's spiritual meditation. Paul's father felt that the gentle rhythms of fly-fishing were similar to God's rhythms. Jesus was a fisherman (a fisher of men too) and fly-fishing was the closest thing to Christ's own meditations that a mortal could get to.
