A Raisin in the Sun

Raisin and the Sun

Which minor character (not a member of the younger household) has the greatest effect on the overall message of the play, and why does the author include this character? Why is he or she more important than other minor characters?

I think that Walter Lee Younger represents the themes of racial disenfranchisement and hopelessness. Although his behavior is often harmful to his family, Walter represents the sense of futility and sense of desperation that permeates the play. Walter desperately wants to get ahead for his family but being a poor black man in America is difficult to overcome.
