Initially mother is not successful. Walter feels emasculated and powerless because he had no say in how the money was spent. Walter does not want to move into a white neighborhood. He criticizes mother out of his own frustrations.

What you need me to say you done right for? You the head of this family. You run our lives like you want to. It was your money and you did what you wanted with it.
